Dynex Support Sucks

Dynex is the Best Buy brand. We were recently there and I noticed a $20 webcam that said it supported OS X 10.1 and greater on the box so I decided to purchase it. I installed the included drivers and software and started up their software. I just get a black screen with “No video input.” The LED on the webcam does turn on and off appropriately. I took it back and exchanged it thinking the unit was deffective. The new one had the same problem.
Unfortunately their included drivers are as ancient as the version of OS X referenced on the box. There are a few commercial and open source driver sets available for web cam support on OS X but unfortunately this camera isn’t supported by any of them. They said they had 24x7x365 support on their website so I figured, what the heck, maybe they have some nice shiny new drivers they forgot to link to on the website.

This is the call:

“So what seems to be the problem?”
“Well I have a Mac and the box said the Mac is supported so I installed the drivers and software that came with it and the software that came with it says there is no video from the cam”
“Oh, well since you said you have a Mac you will need to contact the manufacturer of the computer
to see if…”

“There is nothing wrong with the computer.”
“Right but maybe there is some sort of driver that you need for the Mac to make it work.”
“Exactly, and that driver comes from the manufacturer of the device, that would be Dynex, whom you
represent.”

Click.

Just to be clear, that click there at the end is them hanging up on me. I guess they couldn’t argue with that.

Yep I had a similar conversation a second ago. What a bunch of bullshit.

  2. Kim says:

I bought a dynex DX-DT cam and the vidio is black, tryed to call you and no help you would give me…I am thinking about taking it back if I don’t get the support I need… maybe its the wrong driver on the cd…if so let me know where I can get on on the net …TY Kim

  3. Kerem Gungor says:

I also purchased a DYNEX-DTCAM from Best Buy. I exactly experienced the same problems reported by mikegrb. Dynex Tech Support does not help at all. Only the built-in microphone of the camera works on my iBook (Operation System: Mac OSX 10.3.9), and that is it. There is no image from the camera at all. I will return this useless camera back and claim my money back. I recommend you doing the same and filing your complaint.

  4. Sierra T. says:

Omg yes! The customer service is shit! Im so mad I waited days for this to come in the mail and it dont work on my mac version 10.4.8!
Ergh the stupid customer service lady says i need to take it to bestbuy now and get a refund or exchange it. Dynex is a shitty company.

  5. Kristen says:

Same situation over here. Take it from a former Best Buy employee: don’t buy anything there (especially a best buy brand because they are extremely cheaply made) because their customer service is horrible.

  6. RG says:

Same thing. Told me to call Apple. Quick google search leads to simple conclusion. Dynex = crap.

  7. Scott says:

Wow glad I read this before calling for help on the cam.. but dam I wish I read this before I bought the Junk of a cam.. Same thing here the cam just doesn’t work.. Off it goes back to the store.. I guess there is no way out for a cheep cam on a Mac..

  8. tbeauty says:

  10. Bob says:

this product doesn’t work on any computer. I tried with the Mac, sound but no picture. Windows XP gives an occasional picture and Windows Vista won’t even load the drivers. Too bad no one see’s this site before they waste their money.

  11. john says:

    BY THE WAY VISTA RULES BUT NOTHING WORKS ON IT LO0L;

  13. Scott says:

THESE PEOPLE ARE FUCKING ASSHOLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I Brought two of them, one for myself and my mom. Neither of them worked and when I called Dynex they asked what version of windows I was using. When I told them that I was using OSX, they told me that she was going to transfer me to the Geek Squad. I told her that Dynex makes the camera, not the Geek Squad. She Said they would be able to help me. So I said ok. Then after the Geek told me that they could send someone out to help but she needed some info so she could give me a price quote. I told her to pound sand and I called those looses back and I got a another person who told me the same thing as the first person did. I told him to take his Geek Squad and shove it up his ass. This product is a lot like Best Buy. Shit

  14. scott says:

I am not sure if you found the fix for your webcam problem, but if you don’t have at least $150 (or higher on ebay) for an isight, you might want to check out iMage by eecamm networks. Its $60 and works with ichat( so they say). The rewiews I have read on it sound good and it looks like a good buy. The guy at apple care told me that any cam that is firewire would work with ichat, so before I run out a buy one I will try my video cam. Eventhough the iMage is USB 2.0, it will work with ichat via a plug in from the makers. I will let you know once I have tried it on how good it is. Sorry if the spelling sucks, I am on another computer using

  15. scott says:

Internet Explorer and I cant find spell check.

  16. Sebastian says:

Hi, thanks for all the comments… just bought this cam for my mac and pc…. and well, whadayaknow… it doesnt work on the PC either.

Okay, and will never shop at Best Buy again :)

  17. i purchased a dynex router and ethernet card
and experianced problems with both of these
products. i then called there cusomer service
and was transferred to someone who knew
little about the prouduct and direced me to
The geek squad which is a service of
Best buy that charges for there services.
Best buy makes these prouducts through
Dynex. and is the only seller of this brand.
i then surfed he internet and found many
complaints (blogs) against dynex customer service
and there products . i feel someone had to
get something fixed and i knew he BBB
was the only ones that could change here
buisness for the better. i can only just
bring back the items and let it go .
but i think there is a huge injustice
here and i know i speak for the other
    many complainers against dynex.
i feel that instead of bringing back my
item for another brand more expensive is not
acceptable or even my money. i want to pay less
but not waste gas and time to get
brushed off because thats how i felt.there
    customer service should be more
qualified or not tell me the geek squad can help but ,
its gonna cost me! and i noticed on
the internet i am not alone on this !!
    (see attached site please)

    http://michael.thegrebs.com/2007/01/11/dynex-sucks/

    (theres my proof)!!

please tell them to change there buisness practices (BBB)
so no more people will have to suffer.

“lets just say i sent this to the Better Business Bureau today” , payback this time is for real !

  18. AJ says:

Well am adding a comment since dynex sucks royally. Words cannot describe the anger I have towards dynex and never ever will I buy a dynex product. Their website supposedly has the drivers at the following link
    http://www.dynexproducts.com/t-drivers.aspx
But the frigging drivers suck and half the time the website itself doesnot work.

I have a dynex wg-tdc or something extended wireless card. I just installed vista and the driver doesnt work nor do they have a vista driver. I actually had to use a driver for a different card just to make it work. Shows other companies actually do a better job.

  19. Gaby says:

Can we sue this sons of bitches??? I have the same problem too!!!! Is not fear…!!!! Damn it!!!!

  20. Gaby says:

    I mean fair!!! Sory oops!

  21. GhostBuck says:

I was able to get the Dynex WebCam 100 and 101 to work on all my Vista systems using the following steps.

    1. Download driver from: http://www.dynexproducts.com/skins/Skin_1/Topics/Drivers/DX-WC100_Drivers.zip

    2. Install it, and let it fail. Vista asks if you want to try again with recommended settings. *BEFORE* using the try again feature. (It acted like it wanted to uninstall for the 101 series, but a third try went through.)

    3. In the device manager, the cam will show a problem with the device. Right Click and select update driver.

    4. Select the Browse My Computer option.

    5. Select the Let Me Pick… option.

    6. You should see the VGA USB Camera option. Select and complete the operation.

    7. Open a program that can use your cam (Skype, Messenger, etc.) and test.

    Hope this works for others!

  22. neeeeeeeeee says:

    FUCK dynex!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. alex says:

just ading my name to the list of screwed over customers, same redundant problem as listed above, i gues BEST buy wants you to be brave and buy a camera, cause it’s not so much money, then doesnt work so you go back and the get reeled into buying something more expensive you would not have considered in the first place, or the poor people that actually have the geek squad come over, what a rip off. i suggest everyone to sent comment to bestbuy and better bussines bureau.

  24. mike says:

i bought a dynex, worked great in xp but doesnt in vista, and dynex doesnt have a driver for vista yet, amybe never…bummer

  25. Chem says:

I bought the Dynex DX-DTCAM, installed the drivers successfully, and all I get is black video when I use it (though the cam lights up). I tried emailing Dynex asking if there’s drivers online for it, but havent gotten a response.

    I’m using Windows Vista.

  26. Ariel says:

  27. Hector J Mayorga says:

  28. Michael says:

I just bought this, im on a PC with XP and I had the same problem. Uninstalling the device and reinstalling it worked for me, picture quality is pretty nice.

  29. Soylbelle says:

  30. Soylbelle says:

  31. RotaryJay says:

Wow, I wish I had come across this site before I purchased it today! Same thing, mic works, but no video on my OS X 10.4 Mac Mini. Off to the store I go…

  32. Soylbelle says:

Hey guys, good news my Dynex webcam model DX-DTCAM after going crazy looking for a solution my husband finally found that to get a picture you must to turn the lens to the right ,like with a photo camera and all they advice me was to adjust the settings of the camera and if this didn’t work my pc had the problem, believe it or not. Hope this resolve the problem of some of you as well. :-)

  33. Bill says:

Sorry, Soylbelle, but that turning the lens is crap. Dynex just won’t work, at least not on a Mac. A real P.O.S.

  34. Seamus says:

  36. AJR says:

Well i got a DX-DTCAM when i had xp. It worked! it was amazing (considiring i had a 1998 LogiTech cam!)! then, i upgraded to vista. (DWAA DWAAA DWAAAAAAAAAAA) the cam was blank! the sound worked, but now i can’t IM! it seems i’m not the only one!

  37. cactus says:

Same here, worked perfectly on xp, upgraded to vista then doesnt work. black screen and audio works. I called dynex in march and I was told they r working on the driver. till today again, they are still working on the drivers. I wonder what it takes for them to figure out its crazy.

  38. Victor-Hugo says:

Hey i got the solution :P

The problem is that windows installs Hewlett package drivers instead of the uncertified Dinex drivers!!! So simple tho it took me about 1hr to find… The trick is to install the Dinex drivers on your computer with the CD. Then when you plus in the webcam it will say crap like new device blah blah. You click the advanced option in wich you can choose the drivers folder. Then on the next window you click on the *manually choose* option. Then you will see the Dinex drivers appear. You select them and install. (if you did the correct thing , windows will notify you that these drivers are not certified or w/e) and then it worked for me :P

  39. Victor-Hugo says:

    then you just plug*

  40. tp says:

    Victor-Hugo,

Sounds like you found a solution for pc. What about for Mac? Are we out of luck?

  41. isaac says:

Ya… I just bought one and it dosent work for my mac…. Extremely frustrating….. I am takin it back to best buy and man am I going to have fun with customer service…….

  42. Chris Kiefer says:

I just got my DX-DTCAM to work with Skype on a Mac Mini (OS X 10.4.10). I installed the drivers that came with the CD and it didn’t work. Then I downloaded the driver update on the Dynex website, restarted the computer and Skype recognized the camera connected.

Dynex just put up a new driver earlier this month so try it out.
